'Big Fish,' 'Next to Normal,' 'Fiddler' on upcoming Red Mountain Theatre season

Two new musicals, two classics and one based on a hit movie are on tap for Red Mountain Theatre Company's 2015-2016 season, announced at the RMTC gala at Old Car Heaven on Saturday night.

From "Big Fish," a recent musical based on the acclaimed book by Daniel Wallace, to the legendary "Fiddler on the Roof," the season celebrates "excellent storytelling," says Keith Cromwell, RMTC executive director. "Fiddler was the first show I saw as a child and is amongst what I believe to be on a short list of the most magnificent shows of all time."

RMTC will also present the area premiere of "Next to Normal," a rock musical about a woman battling bipolar disorder. The lead of that show has already been cast.

"RMTC has a strong history of finding and cultivating new talent," Cromwell says. "We look forward to continuing that tradition while at times finding unique opportunities that showcase and challenge our cherished local talent. In that light I am thrilled that we will present Kristi Tingle Higginbotham in 'Next to Normal.'"

Here's a look at RMTC's upcoming season. All shows will be at the RMTC Cabaret Theatre, 301 19th St. North, except for "Fiddler on the Roof," which will be at the Dorothy Jemison Day Theatre at the Alabama School of Fine Arts.

"Big Fish" (Sept. 11-Oct. 4). Based on Birmingham native Daniel Wallace's "Big Fish: A Novel of Mythic Proportions," the 2013 musical tells the story of a tall-tale-telling father trying to come to terms with his son on his deathbed. Andrew Lippa wrote the music, with book by John August, who wrote the screenplay for the 2003 Tim Burton-directed film version.

RMTC Holiday Spectacular (Dec. 3-20). RMTC once again celebrates the season with classic and original songs performed mostly by the kids in the RMTC youth programs.

"Next to Normal" (Feb. 18-21, 2016). Winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, the rock musical by Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt is about a mother dealing with bipolar disorder. Higginbotham will portray the role that won Alice Ripley a Tony Award.

"The Secret Garden" (April 14-24, 2016).  Based on the 1911 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, Marsha Norman and Lucy Simon wrote this musical about a young English girl, orphaned by the cholera epidemic and sent to live with relatives, finding solace in a beautiful garden.

"Sister Act" (May 6-22, 2016).  Based on the 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg, the musical is about Deloris Van Cartier, a nightclub performer who escapes her gangster boyfriend, only to find herself in a convent, where she brings new life to the music the sisters sing.

"Fiddler on the Roof" (July 8-31, 2016). Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick's classic musical about Tevye and Golde and their five daughters. Tevye, especially, is struggling to maintain his Jewish traditions as life changes around him. Songs include "If I Were a Rich Man," "Tradition" and "Sunrise, Sunset."

In addition to the mainstage series, RMTC will present four kids' shows: "My Son Pinocchio" (Nov. 6-8); the Young Performers Showcase (March 5-6, 2016); "James and the Giant Peach Jr." (July 15-17, 2016) and "Legally Blonde Jr." (July 29-31, 2016).
